Toll road scams, occurring all over the US in the last 18 months, involve fraudsters tricking drivers into paying fake toll fees, often by sending phishing emails or text messages that appear to be from legitimate toll agencies like E-ZPass or FasTrak. These messages typically claim the recipient has unpaid tolls or violations and include a link to a fraudulent website that collects personal and financial information. Some scams also involve fake toll websites or QR codes placed near toll booths to redirect payments. These schemes exploit urgency and fear of fines to prompt quick action, making them especially dangerous for unsuspecting drivers.

We’ve reported extensively on toll road scams, and as they continue to worsen we thought it time to gather them in one place. These scams come and go and it’s a good idea to stay up to date, on the where, what and how. We will continue to update this list as appropriate.

    How Do Toll Scams Work?

Toll scams are a type of phishing scheme where criminals impersonate legitimate toll operators to trick drivers into paying fake fees. They typically begin with text messages, emails, or robocalls claiming that you have unpaid tolls or that your account is about to be suspended. The messages create a sense of urgency by warning of escalating fines, late fees, or legal action if you don’t act immediately. Scammers often include links to convincing but fraudulent websites designed to capture your payment details and personal information. Some even spoof phone numbers and use official logos to make their communications look authentic.

Once victims provide their information, scammers may use it for unauthorized charges, identity theft, or to sell on the dark web. Because these scams often rely on fear and urgency, many people pay without questioning the source. Real toll agencies rarely contact drivers via text or email for payment and typically send official notices by mail or through verified accounts and apps. The best defense is to avoid clicking unsolicited links, confirm toll charges through official channels, and report suspicious messages to local authorities or your toll service provider.
