Recently many people have received text messages seemingly from the IRS about a $1,400 payment and wonder if they are legitimate. The short answer is that the IRS payments are real, but the texts are nothing but a SCAM. Sounds tricky? Keep reading to check out the context for the Economic Impact Payment and tips on how to spot the scam!

Is the IRS $1,400 payment real?

    Yes, it is.

At the end of 2024, the IRS announced plan to send out payments of up to $1,400 for individuals who did not previously receive Economic Impact Payments (AKA COVID-19 stimulus payments).

According to the IRS, most of the payments should be completed by late January 2025. Those who qualify for the payment don’t need to take any action to receive the money.

“No action is needed for eligible taxpayers to receive these payments, which will go out automatically in December and should arrive in most cases by late January 2025. The payments will be automatically direct deposited or sent by paper check; eligible taxpayers will also receive a separate letter notifying them of the payment.”
