SuperVPN Data Breach
An alleged recent data breach involving the free VPN service, SuperVPN, has compromised over 360 million user data records. The breach is said to have exposed highly sensitive data including email addresses, original IP addresses, geolocation information, unique user identifiers, and information about visited websites.
Security researcher Jeremiah Fowler uncovered the massive data breach in SuperVPN after he found a publicly exposed database linked to the VPN service containing 133 GB of data, which was promptly closed after his discovery. Interestingly, he found an app called SuperVPN on both Google and Apple’s app stores, but both apps were attributed to different developers. What is concerning about this breach is the fact that, due to the nature of the leaked information, victims could potentially be more vulnerable to cyberattacks.
SuperVPN has a troubling track record of security vulnerabilities and data leaks. In previous instances, the app was found to have vulnerabilities that could enable man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks and expose users’ credit card details. Moreover, SuperVPN has been flagged as a malware-rigged app in the past, leading to warnings for users to delete the app.
