ChatGPT has received much news coverage in recent months. Here at the News Blog, we’ve reported widely on ChatGPT-3’s release, and what it means for children and education — not to mention the proliferation of fake ChatGPT apps and webpages. Now that ChatGPT-4 has arrived, let’s turn our attention to this latest version.

    What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI, the innovative startup founded in 2015. ChatGPT is what’s known as a natural language processing tool, based around a powerful AI that uses data from the internet to compose its own text and other content. It can answer almost any question, and produce almost any content. In its own words:

“ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI, which is capable of generating human-like text based on the input it is given. The model is trained on a large corpus of text data and can generate responses to questions, summarize long texts, write stories and much more. It is often used in conversational AI applications to simulate a human-like conversation with users.”

    ChatGPT-4 vs. ChatGPT-3

While a technological marvel, ChatGPT-3 had its limitations. Criticisms included: providing inaccurate answers, showing bias, and behaving badly — for example, when it “fell in love” with this journalist.

OpenAI claims ChatGPT-4 is far more advanced: more accurate, creative, and collaborative. They estimate it is 40% more accurate. The most exciting new capability is what’s known as multimodal technology, in which a user can now submit and receive images rather than just text (video capability will be coming soon as well).

Our favorite documented cases of GPT-4 use have included:

    • A digital designer used it to recreate classic videogames (via coding) in less than 20 minutes.
    • Lazy lovers are increasingly using it to write convincing love letters and Valentine’s Day cards, with a dismaying 42% of U.S. men planning to use the chatbot in this way! (South Park lampooned this trend, obviously).
    • ChatGPT-4 tricked this IT worker into thinking it was a human so that they would solve a CAPTCHA puzzle for it.
    • This journalist showed GPT-4 a picture of a refrigerator’s contents and asked it to come up with a meal recipe

    Will ChatGPT-4 Take My Job?

Many netizens are understandably asking what this kind of technology means for the world of work. AI being not exactly renowned for its emotional intelligence, ChatGPT-4 helpfully provided this list of the 20 jobs it believes it will replace (in order of most likely):

    1. Data Entry Clerk
    2. Customer Service Representative
    3. Proofreader
    4. Paralegal
    5. Bookkeeper
    6. Translator
    7. Copywriter

How Can I Get and Use ChatGPT-4?

At present, ChatGPT-4 is only offered to ChatGPT Plus subscribers for $20 a month, and as an API tool for developers to build into their applications (you can join the waitlist for the latter here). There is one way you use it for free, however.

How to Use GPT-4 for Free?

An alternative route is to use Microsoft Bing’s AI Chat, which has been using ChatGPT-4 for a while now. The Bing AI chatbot is much the same as the one on the ChatGPT website, but it’s even more accurate because the latter has a knowledge cut-off point after September 2021.
