Crypto Scams of the Week: Blockchain[.]com, Trust Wallet

Crypto Scams of the Week: Blockchain[.]com, Trust Wallet
Last Updated on June 2, 2023

It’s not just innocent investors making money from cryptocurrencies, but scammers too — $14 billion last year, to be precise. For our investor friends out there, it’s important to keep tabs on the scammers’ activities. With that in mind, the following are what we’ve found this week.

    Blockchain[.]com scam

Blockchain was one of the first cryptocurrency financial services companies and is still hugely popular. Unfortunately, scammers are using the platform as a disguise for their email phishing attacks.

Consumers have reported receiving emails like the above. Typically, the would-be victim is notified of an incoming payment. To access it, they are ‘required’ to follow the link that supposedly takes them to the log-in page of their crypto wallet. If they do so however, they will be taken to a fake phishing page made to resemble Blockchain’s.

Falling for this will mean your personal information being compromised, losing your money — even your identity being stolen. Don’t let them get away with it!

    Trust Wallet Scams

Trust Wallet is a popular crypto wallet platform. Unsurprisingly, scammers are using this disguise for their activities. Users are receiving SMS text messages that claim there is some account-related issue – verification most commonly. The links included will lead to fake phishing pages where your personal information will be compromised.

    Fake Log-in Page

Be on the lookout for SMS text messages that read like the following:

    • “-trustwallet- our system has shown that your wallet has not yet been verified. this verification can be done easily via : hxxps://verified-trustwallet[.]com/”.
    • trust wallet: the btc you just sent from your account is being delayed for security reasons. not you? visit {URL} to secure your account.

In addition to phishing text messages, scammers also send potential victims phishing emails. The content of the emails is often similar to the text messages — almost always some bogus verification issue or something closely related.

    Trust Wallet Scams (2)

Just like the malicious text messages, these emails contain links that lead to fake websites posing as the official Trust Wallet site. If you fall for one of these scams, you will end up inadvertently sharing lots of personal information with the scammers — including your Trust Wallet recovery phrase!
